Week of October 23-27

What We Learned This Week: October 23-27

Literacy:

In literacy this week, we began working on a descriptive paragraph about a monster the students created after reading the story Monsters Love Underpants to provide them with inspiration for brainstorming.  We began by planning the monster, adding very descriptive details using adjectives, and then we learned about similes using the words like or as.  The grade 2 & 3's are very excited to revise their writing and read them to their Grade 5/6 buddies next week.

In phonics, students were exploring the long /e/ sound looking at the vowel team of ea.

Numeracy:

In math this week, it was Pumpkin math! Students were exploring estimation and skip coutning by using pumpkin seeds. Students created an initial estimate without looking inside the pumpkin, then opened up the pumpkin to make a better estimation using a benchmark, and then used skip counting to count the actual number of seeds. Students then compared their estimation to their actual count to see how close their estimation was. We then discussed the importance of making accurate estimations.

Art:

In art this week, students finished their leaf art using warm colours (red, orange, yellow) for their leafs and cool colours (blue, green, purple) for their backgrounds.
