Week of September 18-22

What We Learned This Week

Literacy:

In writing this week, students have been continuing to focus on their writing goal of making their writing INTERESTING to their reader. This week's focus was including adverbs in their sentences. Their super sentences should now include a noun, a verb, an adjective and an adverb. As a class we are continuing with our other goal of making our writing CLEAR to our reader. This includes spelling, punctuation, organization and staying on topic. These are goals that we will be working on throughout the year during our different writing units.

Students have also been focusing on making their sentences more interesting by including Tripe Scoop Words. Triple scoop words are words that replace 'boring' words such as, good, fun, bad, nice, big. small etc. with words that better communicate to the reader what they are trying to convey. As a class we brainstormed some triple scoop words that we will be using in our writing next week.

Numeracy:

This week in numeracy, students are continuing to learn about place value and representing their understanding in multiple ways (visual, symbolic, contextual, verbal and physical). Students also focused on the digit 0 as a place holder and that it holds value in a number. For example, 4023 is 4000 + 20 + 3  is different than 423 which is 400 + 20 + 3.  Students also learned that 0 can also be in the left most position, but it does not change the value of the number. For example, 0089 is still 89. We also brainstormed real-life examples where we see 0 in the left position ex. when writing the date: 09/21/23.

Science:

This week in science, students explored the following question: What is matter? Students were introduced to the three different states of matter. Students were tasked with finding solids in the classroom and determining what makes them a solid (ex. they are hard, they don't change shape). Students also explored the properties of liquid by seeing how the same volume of liquid can change shape by taking on the shape of its container. They also explored the properties of a gas by blowing into a glove to demonstrate that a gas spreads out and can change its shape and fill a container.
