Week of October 10-13
What We Learned This Week October 10-13
Literacy:
In writing this week, we continued with our writing process of plan, draft, revise, share. Our writing goal for this week was to add more details to our writing and creating a focus for our writing.
As a class we read the book The Worst Best Friend and students created a picture plan about what they like to do with their best friend, how they can be a good friend, a time when they were the "worst" best friend, how did they feel and how did they fix it. Students then starting drafting their stories by creating a five finger story (topic, detail, detail, one time, feeling). Students will be continuing to use the five finger story to help them stay on topic and add details to their writing. This is the beginning stages of creating a focused paragraph.
Students then used their 3,2,1 check it strategy to revise their work with a partner.
In phonics this week, students applied their knowledge of the digraphs ai and ay that make the long /a/ sound to spell high frequency words such as, rain, paid, train, stain and pay, say, stay, clay and day.
In reading this week, we are continuing to assess students phonological awareness (working with sounds in spoken language) and their decoding skills (letter-sound correspondance) to place students into targeted literacy groups.
Numeracy:
Students were introduced to skip counting by 20's and connected it to their understanding of skip counting by 2's. This week, students were also introduced to money and how they can use their knowledge of skip counting to help them determine the value of a collection of coins. They practiced skip counting by 5's with nickels, by 10's with dimes and loonies and toonies to skip count by 2's. Students were also introduced to the cents sign and dollars sign as a unit of measure.
Today, students played the "Erase" game again to work on their fact fluency.
Science:
This week in Science, students learned about identifying materials in different objects and their properties. Students explored the properties of materials by engaging in hands-on stations. The properties they explored were length, mass, transparency, absorbency, malleability and reflection using different objects made of plastic, wood, metal, clay, glass and paper.
