What We Learned This Week November 20-24   Literacy: This week in writing, students read the book Too Many Toys   for their 5 finger personal narrative assessment following the plan, draft, revise, share routine and using the prompt: What is your favourite toy? Students were assessed on their ability to follow the organizational format of a 5 finger story (topic sentence, detailed supporting sentences, an event and a feeling). Students were also assessed on their ability to add adjectives, verbs, adverbs, similes and triple scoop words to make their sentences more interesting. Furthermore, students were also assessed on writing conventions such as, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.  Students continued with their targeted phonics group and targeted literacy groups.  Numeracy:  In math this week, students finished their data and graphing unit. Week of Nov 6-16

  What We Learned Nov 6-Nov 16 Literacy: In literacy last week, students continued with their mini poetry unit and created poems about bats. Students also created Remembrance Day acrostic poems using the words POPPY or REMEMBER. Today, students wrote about Remembrance Day and answered one of the following questions: What does peace mean to you? What does it mean to be brave? Why is Remembrance Day important to recognize?  It is Metis week this week. In writing, students read the book The Giving Tree by Metis author and illustrator Leah Dorian. Students reflected on what they would give back to the tree and why.  Students also practiced spelling and reading the Grade 2 and Grade 3 High Frequency Word list which can be found in our Google Classroom under literacy. Week of October 30-Nov 3

                                                     What We Learned This Week: October 30-Nov 3 Literacy: In literacy this week, we began a mini unit on poetry. Students learned what poetry might look like, sound like, feel like and what poetry makes us think about.  Students read various poems together as a class to identify how a poem is similar and differnet compared to a story. As a class, we read poems by Shel Silverstein. We also practice choral reading the poem Bats by Jack Prelutsky and identified the different aspects of poetry in his poem such as repetition. Students then read the book Stelluna and watched an educational video on bats to learn more facts about bats. Students began creating their own poems about bats using information about their appearance, diet, habitat, and other interesting facts. Students will be finishing these poe...
