Week of Nov 6-16

What We Learned Nov 6-Nov 16

Literacy:

In literacy last week, students continued with their mini poetry unit and created poems about bats. Students also created Remembrance Day acrostic poems using the words POPPY or REMEMBER. Today, students wrote about Remembrance Day and answered one of the following questions:

What does peace mean to you?

What does it mean to be brave?

Why is Remembrance Day important to recognize?

It is Metis week this week. In writing, students read the book The Giving Tree by Metis author and illustrator Leah Dorian. Students reflected on what they would give back to the tree and why.

Students also practiced spelling and reading the Grade 2 and Grade 3 High Frequency Word list which can be found in our Google Classroom under literacy. We have also added activities that you can do with your student to help them learn to spell and read these words.

Students continued with their targeted phonics group and targeted literacy groups.

Numeracy:

In math, students continued with data and graphing. Students learned about dot plots and how they are similar and different compared to bar graphs. Students surveyed the class and collected data for their dot plots. Students read, created and interpreted dot plots. Students are continuing to work on graphing and data vocabulary to answer questions about various graphs. For example, "How many more students voted blue than red?", "How many less students like cheese pizza over pepperoni?".

This week, students continued with data and learned about pictographs. Students will be finishing data and graphing and will be assessed next week on their knowledge and understanding.

Art:
Last week, students created poppies for Indigenous Veteran's Day and Remembrance Day. Focusing on line, shape and colour.

This week, students created Metis dot art using the art technique of pointillism.

Science:
Last week, students learned about irreversible and permanent changes. Here is a quick video you can review with your child. Students were assessed this week on our matter unit.

Grade 2 essential question: How can the suitability of materials be determined for specific purposes?

Students will be moving onto Social Studies next week and learning about various mapping skills.
