 What we Learned This Week December 11-15


Literacy:

In Literacy this week, we focused on adding conjunctions such as " because", "so" and "but" to create sentences about Winter Solstice. Students also practiced orally reading their sentences as many students will be sharing their sentences at our Winter Concert next week!



Numeracy:

In math this week students were placed in their targeted math groups for our unit on shape and space. Grade 2's focused on identifying the faces, edges and vertices of 3D shapes. 









Grade 3's focused on classifying polygons as either regular or irregular by looking at the length of their sides and their angles. They also explored right angles, perpendicular lines, parallel lines and intersecting lines. 



Today, students looked at the artwork of Pablo Picasso to make their very own Picasso art pieces using polygons on Google Slides. Students reviewed the characteristics that make a polygon: needs to be 2D/flat, have straight sides and be enclosed.  Students create some awesome art pieces using only regular and irregular polygons!


Art:

This week students created art for our Winter Solstice Concert. They created birch trees using cool colours (purple and blue) to represent Winter Solstice being the longest night and warm colour (orange and yellow) to represent the longer and warm days ahead.  Students added details to their trees, the sky and shadows to the snow. Check out their artwork as you come in for the concert on the 19th!







Social Studies:

In Social Studies, our focus this week was continuing to answer the question: Where do we live in the world? We looked at our province of Alberta, our city of Calgary and our community of Southwood and Canyon Meadows. Students explored this concept using Google Earth. We also used Google Earth to see where Calgary is in relation to other Canadian cities and where Southwood and Canyon Meadows are in relation to other communities in Calgary.

  • Thursday, December 21 - Holiday Gear Day - festive hat, glowing necklaces, peppermint leggings! You name it!  
  • Friday, December 22 - Pajama day!

December 21- Healthy Hunger Lunch - Subway

December 22 – Last day of classes

  What We Learned This Week: October 23-27 Literacy: In literacy this week, we began working on a descriptive paragraph about a monster the students created after reading the story Monsters Love Underpants to provide them with inspiration for brainstorming.  We began by planning the monster, adding very descriptive details using adjectives, and then we learned about similes using the words like or as.  The grade 2 & 3's are very excited to revise their writing and read them to their Grade 5/6 buddies next week. Week of September 11-15

 What We Learned This Week Literacy: Writing:This week we focused on developing our writing stamina and creating our writing goals for the year. Together we created 2 writing goals, one to make our writing interesting and one to make it clear. To make our writing more interesting to our readers we have been learning about  nouns, verbs and adjectives. Students have been experimenting with stretching their sentences  to make super sentences by answering the questions: Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?  Numeracy:  This week in math, students have continued to learn about place value and representing numbers in different ways. Students have learned how to expand 3-digit and 4-digit numbers by applying their understanding of place value.  As part of our daily math routine, students have been engaging in math talks to develop their mental math strategies, mathematical vocabulary, as well as their ability to be efficient and flexible in their thinking. Week of October 2-6

  What We Learned This Week October 2-6 Literacy: In writing this week, we began our writing process of plan, draft, revise, share. Our writing goal for this week was to add more details to our writing and creating a focus for our writing. We talked about how sometimes we cannot fit all information into one sentence (becomes a run-on sentence), so we need to break it up into more sentences that still remain on topic.  As a class we read the book  If I Built a School  and students created a picture plan if they were to build a school, what would they include in their school. Students then starting drafting their stories by creating a five finger story (topic, detail, detail, one time, feeling). Students will be continuing to use the five finger story to help them stay on topic and add details to their writing.
