Week of December 18-22
What we Learned This Week December 11-15
Literacy:
In Literacy this week, students were introduced to narrative story writing. Students viewed short films such as Partly Cloudy and Pip to demonstrate the elements of a story: characters, setting, problem and solution. Students also learned that the characters and setting are introduced in the beginning of the story, the problem is introduced in the middle, and the solution at the end of the story. Students then participated in a "Roll a Story" activity about either winter or Christmas to brainstorm ideas for their narrative stories.
Students also learned how we can hook our reader using sounds, action, dialogue, imagery and questions.
They then planned out their stories in their graphic organizer and began drafting the beginning, middle and end.
Students also focused on correct errors in sentences such as, punctuation and capitalization. Students learned about when to capitalize using the acronym MINTS.
In math this week, students reviewed fact fluency strategies such as, doubles (8+8) and doubles plus one (8+9) to help with their efficiency in their facts. Students also played a game called "Scoot" to practice 2-digit by 2-digit addition.
In Science this week, students explored the following learning intentions:
I can identify ways creativity is used to design instructions.
I can create a set of instructions that could be followed by a human or a machine to complete a task.
Students created their own unique codes to design a picture. They then read their codes verbally to a partner and their partner had to try and re-create their design using their coding instructions.
