 What we Learned This week November 27-December 1


Literacy:

In Literacy this week, we focused on identifying, understanding and correcting sentence fragments. First, we learned what makes a complete sentence which includes a subject and a verb. Then as a class, we practiced identifying them in sentences and then correcting sentence fragments that were either missing the subject or the verb. Students then practiced independently correcting sentences fragments and elaborating on their sentences by adding adjectives, verbs, and adverbs.  Next week, students will be focusing on adding conjunctions such as " because", "so" and "but". 



Numeracy:

In math this week students were placed in their targeted math groups for our unit on shape and space. Grade 2's focused on identifying 2D shapes and 3D shapes as well as sorting 2D shapes by two attributes. The Grade 3's worked on recognizing polygons and naming polygons based on their number of sides. 

Telus Spark: 

A special thank you to Parent Council who funded our trip to the Science Centre this week. Students enjoyed exploring all the science exhibits and participated in a math session about shapes, patterns and number manipulation through movement. 




Social Studies:

In Social Studies, our focus this week was answering the question: Where do we live in the world? We looked at our continent, North America and our country of Canada. Students explored this concept using Google Earth. We also used Google Earth to see where Canada is in relation to other countries that students in our class are from using the vocabulary "near" and "far". 


STEM Friday:

Today, students engaged in a snow fort STEM challenge using the engineering design process where they were tasked with brainstorming, planning, creating and reflecting on their snow fort using toothpicks and plasticine. Students incorporated their knowledge of 3D shapes to create a variety of different forts.

  What We Learned This Week: October 23-27 Literacy: In literacy this week, we began working on a descriptive paragraph about a monster the students created after reading the story Monsters Love Underpants to provide them with inspiration for brainstorming.  We began by planning the monster, adding very descriptive details using adjectives, and then we learned about similes using the words like or as.  The grade 2 & 3's are very excited to revise their writing and read them to their Grade 5/6 buddies next week. Week of October 2-6

  What We Learned This Week October 2-6 Literacy: In writing this week, we began our writing process of plan, draft, revise, share. Our writing goal for this week was to add more details to our writing and creating a focus for our writing. We talked about how sometimes we cannot fit all information into one sentence (becomes a run-on sentence), so we need to break it up into more sentences that still remain on topic.  As a class we read the book  If I Built a School  and students created a picture plan if they were to build a school, what would they include in their school. Students then starting drafting their stories by creating a five finger story (topic, detail, detail, one time, feeling). Students will be continuing to use the five finger story to help them stay on topic and add details to their writing. Week of September 11-15

 What We Learned This Week Literacy: Writing:This week we focused on developing our writing stamina and creating our writing goals for the year. Together we created 2 writing goals, one to make our writing interesting and one to make it clear. To make our writing more interesting to our readers we have been learning about  nouns, verbs and adjectives. Students have been experimenting with stretching their sentences  to make super sentences by answering the questions: Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?  Numeracy:  This week in math, students have continued to learn about place value and representing numbers in different ways.
